Mindfulness simply means being present and aware of your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and environment to better understand and control your emotional triggers. For example; anger or fear is an emotion that gets triggered due to specific reasons in each one of us. My triggers will be very different from yours. But when we are in the moment, we are busy reacting to situations without pausing to fully understand why. Mindfulness teaches you to pause.

Often times, Mindfulness gets defined as meditation. But meditation is one of the ways to give yourself pause for reflection. Think of it as ‘being Mindful’ is the destination and ‘mediation’ is one of the paths to get there. The concept has its origin in Zen beliefs and practices and therefore easier to explain through Zen stories.
